New England Lax Journal Highlight Emass and Laxachusetts Summer Domination

Select club lacrosse is a big deal throughout New England, with roughly four dozen club teams from the six-state region coming together to play in some of the nation’s biggest and best recruiting and training tournaments.

Here, in alphabetical order, are New England clubs that reached the championship rounds of tournaments during the summer of 2010:

21 Lacrosse Black Jacks: The Black Jacks Black squad finished the Battle of the Hot Beds Team Camp ranked No. 2 out of 60 squads in attendance. The Black Jacks went 9-0 in divisional play, losing only to the eventual champion Long Island Sting in the semifinals. The tournament/camp, at the University of Delaware, holds two all-star games — one each for rising juniors and seniors – and five members of the Black Jacks squad earned the honor: midfielders Thomas Flibotte (Cohasset, Mass.), Stephen Sousa (Marshfield, Mass.), Bryan Barry (Duxbury, Mass.), and defensemen Sam Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.), and Patrick Hannigan (Hanover, Mass.). In the All-Star game, Flibotte led the White team with two goals.

While the Black Jacks missed out on the playoff round at the Gait Cup in Gettysburg, Pa., Flibotte, Sousa, Will Delorey (Salisbury School, Norwell, Mass.) and Alex Kinnealey (Cohasset, Mass.) made the list of tournament all-stars.

Brass City BLAZE: The BLAZE — a first-year girls travel team made up mostly of players from Brookfield, New Milford, and Wolcott, Conn., plus Brewster and Lagrangeville, N.Y. — won the Silver Medal in the intermediate division at the Connecticut State Nutmeg Games, July 29-31. The BLAZE was undefeated going into the championship game, but dropped a rematch with ReLax 2 by a goal.

CT Chargers: The Chargers U18 and U17 boys teams both won their divisions at Bryant’s Bulldog Classic, with the U17 team also finishing undefeated at the Bison Brawl and the Charger tournament. The U16 Blue and Gold teams also went undefeated at the club’s own Charger Tournament. Chargers U16 and U15 Gold teams were finalists at the Tri-State tournament, with the U15 Blue squad going undefeated at the Pride Fest, and finishing 4-1 at both the Big Time Shootout on Long Island and the Harvard Classic.

On the girls side, the Chargers girls had similar success, with the 2013 Gold squad winning the Tri-State Championships by defeating the 2013 Blue squad in the finals.

Eastern Massachusetts Minutemen: The 2011 Minutemen won the Elite division of the 2010 Sound High School Tournament July 17-18, finishing with a 6-1 record and defeating Rhode Island-based Next Level for the title.

The 2011 squad also was a finalist at the All Nations Top 16 Shootout, winning its first five games before losing to the Long Island Sting Black squad, 7-4, in the championship game. Attackman Todd Galvin (Boston College High, Whitman, Mass.), midfielders Kyle Foster (Medfield, Mass., Christian Durham (Catholic Memorial, Quincy, Mass.), Kevin Curry (Holliston, Mass.), goalie Christopher Fotta (Xaverian, Duxbury, Mass.), and defensemen Garrett Read (Medfield, Mass.), and Jake Kissick (Cohasset, Mass.) made the tournament’s all-star team.

The Minutemen’s 2012 squad, meanwhile, won the varsity division of the Sound tournament in Fairfield, finishing with a 6-0 record to earn the crown. The same squad finished 5-0 at the New England Team Showcase July 4th weekend in Devens, Mass., with attackers Noah Ellis (Hingham, Mass.) and Jon Gomer (Duxbury, Mass.), Austin Bannister (Catholic Memorial, Kingston, Mass.), and goalie Conor Darcey (Wellesley, Mass.) earning all-tournament honors.

Continuing the Minutemen’s domination of the Fairfield tournament was the 2013 squad, which won the high school division with a 6-0 record, defeating its own sister club – the Minutemen’s 17-and-Under squad – in the finals.

The Eastern Mass. Minutemen’s 2014 AA team captured its division at the Big Time Long Island Shootout in late June, defeating four Long Island teams en route to the title.

Granite State Warriors: The Warriors 13-U boys went 7-0 to win its division at the Bulldog Classic at Bryant, knocking off the Stickheads from West Islip, N.Y. to take the title. The team followed that up with a 5-0 championship run in the 13-U A division at the New England Youth Lacrosse All-Star tournament.

Midfielders Joey Kruy (Phillips Andover, Sudbury, Mass.) and Jack Connolly (St Sebastian’s, Wellesley, Mass.) made the tournament all-star team, along with defender James Burke (Duxbury HS, Duxbury).
